That is pretty much true. If you want a more robust timing set, the are a couple people that make some very expensive sets for the non-vented (so much that you might as well do the vented swap and have more options).

It really depends on how high you plan to rev the motor. If you're keeping it to under 6K then you can probably get away with a stock replacement chain. If you're going to go above that number, then you should look at either a LT4 ED chain or doing a double roller/electric water pump conversion.

Lots of people use the stock set (especially with the 93-94s because of the cost to swap to vented). It is your choice. If you are going to be doing a lot of high rpm stuff, I would try to go with something heavier duty.
If your scenario is that you are already getting a new cam and need to get a new opti, then the swap makes much more sense and won't cost that much extra.

So do you think with I would need a heavy duty timing chain if I go with a cc306 with no head work or anything???

Ah this is strangely like my post from a month or so ago...search for "OBDI/Cloyes issues"...you should be able to find me there.

shoebox responded to this one too, i bet he's sick of rehashing it by now

hope this helps, and just for the record i decided to just get a new stock gm chain with my upcoming cam swap (94 formy)...

Let's be honest do chains just magically break? Pretty much NO. Of course there are some rare exceptions, but seriously, unless you are revving deep into the 6k mark or even 7k...There is just no need as far as I am concerned.

I'll find out for myself shortly...
