Timing Chain was Installed Wrong!!!
Well I had pulled my motor apart for the first time since I had my engine builder assemble the short block and I found something that amazed me.
I have a Edelbrock Double Roller and the crank gear has 3 keyways on it..The keyways are lettered A(advanced),R(Retarded), and O(straight up?)
I called Edelbrock and they told me the cam dot should line up with the O on the crank gear which would be straight up.
There is another smaller dot on the crank gear that is 3 teeth to the left of the O which is where my timing chain is right now. This smaller dot has a 2 degrees stamped out beside it.
Im not sure how bad this would make my car run but I would guess it would throw my timing in the computer & the injectors firing off
I am trying to get ahold of my engine builder and ask him if he made a mistake or if he degreed the cam and moved it to that smaller dot on purpose..
What do you guys think about it?
Car dynoed 390/390 but the HP peaked real early(5800)
Cam should make power up to 6500..
Thanks
Cody

MOre than likely not going to make a huge difference if it was only off two degrees. That would have just knocked the powerband down as you stated, and lost a few ponies up top.
At WOT, the injectors are firing so fast that its not really going to matter. Also remember the 93 cars were batch fire, while 94+ were sequencial (sp?), and the 93s never really made any less power.

Hmm...I have seen people with their Timing Chain being off 1 tooth and they noticed a difference when installed correcty..Mine is off 3 teeth..
Still waiting on my engine builder to return my call...

Using a retarded/advanced keyway is different than skipping a tooth. The keyways actually move the crank a little too in relationship to the cam, so in the end it will only be adv or retarded 2º.
If you miss a tooth (not dot to dot) like i did when installing mine, its more like 12º (guessing, but LARGE error margin).

Ahh, I understand now..So should I just go ahead and install it straight up and go with it?

Just remember.... if you move the cam with relationship to true TDC, with the Opti, you are altering the ignition timing. In effect, when you move the cam, you are losing the Opti's pseudo reference to TDC. Your spark timing tables will have to altered accordingly, at least until you have a chance to get it on a dyno and optimiize spark and fuel.
