Timing
You might want to provide a "signature" with basic info about your car, inculding the year, model, tranny, etc. The Opti has two different drive designs, depending on year. Without knowing which one you have, it makes it harder for people to suggest possible causes of the problem.
Before buying an MSD opti you should have a keyed hub, degreed damper and fabricated a timing pointer, otherwise you are just guessing.
It sounds to me like you are on the verge of costing yourself a lot of time and money. Last guy I knew who said the things you are, broke the timing adjustment on the MSD and had to go back to stock then I found some mixed up plug wires for him. The plug wires were the problem and in an effort to "tune" with the MSD timing adjustment he cost himself $500 and days of wasted time.
If you have the stocker try it and see if the car runs right.
Since he only has the MSD cap and rotor, I think he's just trying to insure he has the Optii indexed correctly to the cam. I don't think he is trying to use the MSD timing feature, since that's on the body of the Opti.
Without knowing which drive he has, we're sort of spinning out wheels.
