Throttle Position Voltage Question

Here is my data:

Idle: 0.39 volts

WOT: 3.92 volts

I need a new throttle position sensor correct?

There should be a 4.0 volt difference no?

Isn't it supposed to be over 4.5 volts?

It would be if at Idle it was over .5 volts.

Looks like you may need a new one Grip. Any symptoms with the car?

96Z:

Car doesn't kick down to first gear from a 25mph roll when I go WOT. Only kicks down to 2nd.

Car shifts in every gear at 5000rpm instead of 5700 when you don't manually shift it.

Car seems a bit sluggish.

You are kind of on the low side of the scale at both ends, but have you a way to look at it with a scanner to see what % throttle the pcm is calculating from those voltages? If it is calculating 0%-100%, then it should work ok. Having said that, some people have reported better response when the low setting is ~.6v or so.
You could try slotting the mounting holes in the TPS to try to raise the initial voltage and thereby hopefully increasing the WOT voltage, too. Just a thought, before you lay out cash for a new TPS. I know you have other things to spend your money on.

Nope. It "should" go over 4 volts at WOT but just because it doesn't, doesn't necessarily mean things aren't working properly. You really need a scan tool like shoebox said to check TPP to see if you are getting 0% to 100% throttle position.

FYI, a reading of 4.8v or higher for 1 second will throw an SES light so just under that would be the high end of the band.

Thanx guys.

Mr. Shoe: slot the back side of the mounting holes so it sits closer to the TB?

You elongate (slot) the mounting holes, so that you can turn the TPS a little, changing the relationship to the throttle shaft tab. This way, you can mount it loosely and then turn it while monitoring the voltage with a meter or with a scan tool, until you get it to where you want it. Then tighten the screws.

Real quick...tipping the top of the TPS forward will raise the voltage.
