I did one on a friends GTA, could not get the pump out either. Ended up cutting the metal lines off the housing and reconnecting with fuel line and clamps. Took a much bigger hole to cut out also.

Wish these guides were around 3 years ago when I did mine. I used a huge cutoff wheel with sparks everywhere. My buddy was behind the garage with 911 on speed dial.

I marked it out and drilled a 1/2 or smaller hole in one corner and used a pair of offset sheetmetal sheers. I have a big set of specialized sheet metal sheers from when I used to work in HVAC and they worked perfectly. I had it very cleanly cutout in like a minute or two, that really is an easy and very safe method. I would not feel safe grinding away just 1" above that gastank!

I went to Home Depot, but the sheet metal they had was way too thin. What gauge sheet metal do you recommend to make a cover?

BTW, using metal snips was a freakin' PITA!

I believe I used 20 gauge sheet metal. It doesn't really need to be very thick, it's just a cover.

Thanks. I just want it to be sturdy enough in case I decide to actually use that area as a trunk.
