Re: Thinner headgaskets to bump CR

I believe on a stock LT1 if you change out the stock head gaskets with the gaskets GM put on the Impala LT1s then it would bump the CR from 10.5 to 11.0. Sounds like that should work out for you too but I hope somebody else varifies what I said...

I called a parts house and they said the part number for the Impy SS and the fbody lt1 are the same for the headgaskets.

Odd.. I know the impala gaskets are thinner but I just dont remember by how much exactly. A search in this area of the forum should give you a part number

A half point of compression isn't going to make that big of a difference. If all else fails, have the heads milled a little bit.

Impy head gaskets are 0.029 thick. I think the stock is like 0.049....I can't remember exactly.

Re: Thinner headgaskets to bump CR

I would change to a thinner head gasket before I were to mill some heads....quicker, cleaner.

But...nothing wrong with having them cleaned up a little and checking for flatness.

Re: Thinner headgaskets to bump CR

You are looking for the CAPRICE head gaskets, look for ones for a 95 with the 5.7 LT-1, don't get the baby (4.7) Caprice gaskets as they will be wrong. The Caprice uses Iron heads and the Impala SS uses aluminum from my understanding. The iron head head gaskets are the thin ones, look for ones that are pre-compressed if you are using them on aluminum heads. The thin Mr. gaskets are a good choice, just keep them in a cool place until you are ready to use them and peel the wrapper off carefully to keep from removing all the coating. Good luck, I'm doing a blown head gasket repair now and I'm keeping the thick stock gaskets as my heads were shaved mucho.

Re: Thinner headgaskets to bump CR

Mr Gasket PN 5716 are .026"-.027" thick

The other is the Impala GM gasket PN 12553160 at .028"-.029"

You want the total gap or "quench" between the top of the Piston at TDC and the head deck to be .040" if you don't have the block decked (it being stock still) then the thinner the head gasket the better.

Re: Thinner headgaskets to bump CR

when you get those Mr. G gaskets, stick them in the freezer for a little bit before opening them, they have a problem with sticking together and peeling some of the black laminate coating off, it should help with that some!
