i remember a while back i painted my intake manifold black, then changed my mind and made it white because i didn't want it to hold heat- and it didn't look that great either

i know this wont make a differance in the real world, but coneptually-

If i painted my water pump black vs white (its going black)
would it transfer heat better
or
transfer less (since white is ristant to absorbing heat, it cant take it in and release it)


I KNOW THAT THIS WONT MAKE A DIFFERANCE
just wondering the physics/reasoning behind it

Especially Chuck's comments about emmitances. I did a little reading up on the subject after reading that thread and the conclusion I came to is that color doesn't matter. The finish (shiny vs dull) has a bigger effect than anything else.... just like the man said.
The black body stuff is only relevent in UV situations, and theres no UV light under the hood of your car.
Paint can also act as an insulator but the insulation effect is so small that it's not even worth considering. At least this is the gist of my research on the subject.
I'll also admit that this may not be 100% accurate, but that can happen when you skim read on a subject. It was enough to satiate my curiosity on the matter.

Funny this came up,
Today my RA was begging me and my roomate to join in this residence hall event called "the perfect community."
Basicaally a COMPLETE over exaduration of how minorities are mistreated
my friend and I had to represent the "black community" being the
two whitest kids in the dorms- I wear asics and NB sneakers for Christ sakes! I dont even own a pair of Nikes. Harvard students even stared at me and said "wow look at that white boy"

anyway, it was basically like a real life sim city where my community got it hard and couldn't get paperwork and constantly got arrested. 3/4 of the way throught the game we had NOTHING built, the hispanic community had a building built (which we knocked over the end of the game and called it a "colored war " (and then told my RA to keep her white *** out of it ) and the "whites" had thriving community, church, hospital ect.

we got pissed off, grabbed a marker and just started sniffing it.

5 min later i was kinda dizzy and then i hear "who the hell stole the perm marker" as i am handing it to my ROOMATE . I was actually kinda dizzy and got throw in the SIM JAIL for drug abuse (how ironic )

on a side note-
at the end of the game you got a "prize" if you explained what your learned from the game. I said the you shouldn't drop the soap in the prision showers when chris (my roomie) was around

 

I personly don't care to much for paint fumes (I paint houses on the side) so it reminds me of work too much. Now Carb Cleaner, I just LOVE the smell of that stuff.

 

I'm curious if it will even make a difference tempwise since the heat is coming from an internal source as opposed to external. The metal heating the paint instead of vice versa,

Just playing with ya. I met all my close friends last year when i was a freshy in the dorms. Now i'm less then 12 hrs away from signing a lease next year with 2 girls ( whom i never seen before last night) I saw an ad in our school newspaper for 2 chicks who were looking for 2 female roomates,, sooooooooooo i made my friend call and ask if it mattered what sex, and they said nope.....
So me and my current roomate are going to ditch our 2 other roomates right now -next year and sign with these chicks....

Its more money, but its hella worth it!! Ahhh college is about to get REAL GOOD baby!!!!!!
