Testing ICM ac or dc scale on B terminal?

Im trying to troubleshoot a no start/randomly dying 97z. Everything Ive read on this site says test terminal B on AC scale and look for pulses at 1.0-4.0 V. I just found this somewhere. Step 3 in this says DC scale?

http://www.justanswer.com/view_image..._173311_a1.gif

Im asking because i do not get an AC signal when the car is acting up.

DC meters read average of several counts. AC reads RMS, either way you'll probably read something.

I've noticed that in the GM book. I always considered it a misprint. Earlier versions of the troubleshooting procedure say AC scale.
