tempermental car.
Hey guys, I'm new to the site. been lurking on the forums for a while now. but I've come to a problem with my car and hoping you guys can help me out.
I'm driving a 95 z28 with a tweaked LT1 I can't tell you exactly what the tweaks were cause the previous owner wasnt there when the car was sold to me. This problem I'm about to explain happens ALOT during the winter. But its beginning to happen in the summer time now. I've only had it since last april/may.
When I go to start the car it wont start. It makes a winding noise and clicks off. It's a faint winding noise, I don't know how to explain the noise. It's like when you have an (house) ac going and turn it off. It makes that noise for a few moments and turns off. After a few minutes later it'll finally start. the time differentials vary between 5 and 10 minutes. It doesn't do it all the time tho. Like I went to work at 2 today, the car started fine. Went to lunch around 7 and it wouldn't start for about five minutes. Then it started normal. I'm about to leave to go back it started fine.
Now I'm not mechanic so I have no idea what could be wrong. I've spent hundreds, close to thousands of dollars on mechanics just to tell me they can't figure it out unless it happens while its with them. It's really becoming seriously irritating.
Any ideas what it could be?
I also don't know if this will help. But I believe the electrical aspect of the car is fudged up. I had both power window motors replaced since they died out. After having them both working, the passenger one died and wont roll down but the driver side will. Also my radio will lose power and to fix that I put my foot on the gas petal (not pushing it.) and kick up and the power to the radio will kick on. The radio and the windows loses power when that happens. but work when I kick that spot. I had my compressor replaced with a new one and the ac doesnt work. A retired mechanic said it seems like the compressor isn't getting any power cause its not kicking on. (which the other one didn't turn at all and one mechanic told me I need to get the compressor replaced thats when I got the new one put in.) The retired mechanic told me about a paper clip trick I could try on the plug to the compressor but he didn't exactly tell me how to do it. But it was to see if the compressor plug is the problem with it.
I hope all this made sense. I have to get back to work.

The radio and power windows receive power from the "Retained Accessory Power" (RAP) module. Sounds like the module may be loose or failing. Its under the dash, not too far to the right of the accel pedal mount.

Also, check all of your grounds.
A long time ago I had an '85 cutlass that the main body ground wire went bad on, when I touched the shifter a circuit would complete and all my electrical gremlins would go away. (headlights not working, etc.)
I replaced the battery to body ground and never had a problem afterwords.

OMG I hate electrical problems...especially on conversions where the LT1 engine has to mate with the RX-7 system. Mine ended up being a bad wire feeding my PCM.
Moral: have good diagnostic equipment.
