Temp problems after opti install...

My new opti is in and the car starts up and runs nicely. But I have problem still. I drained the coolant and have a bucket of it sitting out there. However, I went to replace it with new coolant and suddenly the funnel began overflowing?? How can this be when I have much more coolant drained than I put back in? I let it still to see if it went down... it didn't. Then i took a little bit of it out again and started the car again. Drove it for a little with no trouble lights except the "check gauges" light. But anyways, the temp gauge is way up at 260 so I go home. Is this normal after draining the coolant? Do I let it sit and gradually fill more coolant in or something? I'm kinda lost since I haven't done it before.
Thanks for any help.

You did not let the thermostat open, so you could put back the rest of the coolant.

Ok, so I guess I didn't figure it out then. I've been slowly adding coolant to it and starting it up as of now. Do I just remove the thermostat or something to fix it?

Wait, I just read the thermostat page on your site. Can I open the bleeder screw until coolant comes out?

You should have done that to begin with. Just keep adding until you get it all back in there (or it's full).
