Tapping noise

After the engine rebuild I have a tapping or ticking noise from under the drivers valve cover. When I adjusted the rockers I didn't hear it at first. Now I hear it all the time, then it goes away and comes back. Oil pressure is very good. When I took the cover off too try and figure which one it is,I can't tell. I readjusted them all again and still the same. Could a lifter or push rod be bad causing it to not get oil all the time? I didn't even look to see if oil was coming out all of them or not. Engine had maybe 1000 miles.

Re: Tapping noise

not exactly sure but it COULD be a rod bearing... but that would be underneath the engine

Re: Tapping noise

Have you ruled out it being a exhaust leak from the headers ?? the noise some times can sound
like a rocker arm ticking valve
Next time you change the oil try some kind of engine flush ,mystery oil , seafom ??
maybe something is stuck in the lifters ??

Re: Tapping noise

Not an exhaust leak. Anyone have opinions on what is best to put in the oil.

Re: Tapping noise

Will I be able to tell which one by watching the oil coming it of the push rods?

Re: Tapping noise

A pre-ignition or detonation of the spark. Both of these symptoms can cause a metallic ping, sounding noise.

Re: Tapping noise

I reused the stock lifters. I put stp engine cleaner in then did an oil change and its still the same. I will pull it apart and see if any of the rockers aren't getting oil.

Re: Tapping noise

I am experiencing the same ticking/tapping noise. I have done a number of things, check for exhaust leak, lifter swap, changed the rocker arms, replaced fuel injectors, checked the rods, adjusted rocker arms three times, run seafoam and other engine cleaners through engine. the noise does not seem to rob the car of power or make it run bad. It actually runs great, but sounds bad. Does the tapping increased with acceleration? Mine does. Racking my brain trying to fix. My engine had a blown head gasket, but it has been repaired for over four years now. If anybody has any other suggestions please let us know.

Re: Tapping noise

(1) I'm taking a guess but I would say even if it squirts oil it could still be sticking ??????
Don't laugh but if you take a garden hose about 5 foot long and place one end up to your ear
and place the other end on the valve cover moving lifter to lifter you can pin point
where the noise is the loudest .....if you have to take it apart check the push rods to make sure that one of them is not bent

(2) Mrcallison A spark plug wire will make a ticking noise... One of the engine pulleys can tick if there is a bad spot / crack ... are you having any trouble with the belt ???

Re: Tapping noise

It makes the ticking sound at first startup then goes away. After the car is driven for a little while it ticks again and doesn't stop. It is heard best from outside the car, not under the hood. I'm pretty sure its not the rockers because when adjusting then I loosened until they tapped then tightened til they stopped. Then I turned half a turn.

What happens to a lifter that it makes the ticking noise? They are previously used lifters and rods. An exhaust leak would make noise all the time, right?
