Don't count on being able to just grind down the alternator and bolt it on. My valve covers are not very tall and grinding was not enough. I cut out the back of the alt. case entirely (where it was hitting) and then grinded downt the face of the valve cover. It still would not fit. All valve covers are different so there is no telling if it will work or not.

Also, if you grind on the alternator, think about where the shavings are going. The are going to fall inside the case. Plan on taking the case apart to blow it out at least (you don't want shavings in the bearings). Remember, if you grind on the case of the alternator, you can never use it as a core if the alternator goes out. I wish I would have done it right the first time and notched the valve cover right away, or bought ones that had a notch. Now I have a grinded alternator and I still had to notch the valve cover.

When you said "Tall" I think of something like these-

That are like 5" high in the center, in which case you'd have to grind like 1/4 of the alternator off

Jsut goign to get the New Covers Notched...At least this way I know that I can sleep well at night knowing I can run an Agressive *** cam without worrying about any thing hitting. The more I get to working on my car the more flaws I realize about these things. They should have relocated the ABS module and but the Alti on the Vette side.

Oh ok, like i said those are 1/4" taller than stock... when i think of tall valve covers i think of something say 1" or so more than stock... In which case no amount of alternator grinding is going to do. I was actually looking at mounting a 2" shallower ford alternator from a lightning with a custom bracket which would allow enough room and no notching to the tall covers.

I'm using the GM 141-132's. I only had to clearance the back of the alternator slightly to get them to fit.
There's pictures on my web site. Click on the 2 top left pictures of the engine.
