Lightbulb Talked with my engine builder about the 383, here's what we're looking at...

I originally just wanted a budget stock rebuild, but since I hosed teh crank, took .028 off it when I spun the bearing, some things changed...I still do not want to go super overboard, as this is my daily car, and I have 2 mustang projects I need to dump money into.

We priced it out a few different ways.

To get the current Scat 9000 crank, Scat 4340 6" I-Beam Rods, & the SRP Forged lightweight pistons only cost $100 more than separatlely getting the Scat 9000 crank, Scat 4130 5.7" rods, and Speed-Pro pistons. Worth the extra $100 IMO. I'm going to check around ebay etc. to see what else I may be able to find. One thing I noticed is that upon asking him again going through some of the machine work, it's now cheaper than originally stated. Maybe he's cutting me breaks on the machinework buy buying some of the parts through him.

Other issue I'm not too sure on is the Camshaft. It's going to be a 383, ported heads, maybe ported intake, long tube headers, enlarged valves, and whatever else you see in the chart. Decided against the LT4 Hotcam, general opinion is it won't be enough.

Here are the specs on the most "popular" power-making LT1 Camshafts.
CC305........220/230...114...510/510.....$240
CC306........230/244...112...510/540.....$240
XE 224/230...224/230...111...????.........$250

NCC-224HL
HIGH ENERGY
Comp Cams 224HL Camshaft 224/230 duration @ .050", .525"/.560" lift with 1.5 rockers, .560"/598" lift with 1.6 rockers. Excellent cam for 350 naturally aspirated cars, street/strip. $247.95

NCC-224XH
XTREME
Comp Cams 224XH Camshaft 224/230 duration @ .050", .567"/.584" lift with 1.5 rockers, .605"/.622" lift with 1.6 rockers. The most powerful mid duration Comp Cam available. $247.95

NCC-224XL
XTREME
Comp Cams 224XL Camshaft 224/230 duration @ .050", .503"/.510" lift with 1.5 rockers, .536"/.544" lift with 1.6 rockers. Almost as powerful as the XH but easier on the valvetrain. $247.95

There's bigger ones out there too of course. http://www.cmotorsports.com/lt1customcamshafts.htm

I'm not too sure how the Clevite Hydro Roller lifters are, but they're a lot cheaper than anything else out there.

Unsure if I should go with H-bearings, or the regular P bearings.

Everything adds up so damn quick! On top of this I still need a new Optispark (Good idea to replace, 110K miles), waterpump (Might as well since it's out?), Long Tubes, probably some other small things...

Going through this list, if you can identify things that are a waste of money feel free to bring them up and I'll discuss it with you and the engine builder. The one thing that catches my eyes is the head work. Not sure if it's worth going to the bigger valves.

He did say that he's expecting this motor to make ~450HP though.

Thoughts.?

I would be sad if you built that nice bottom end and put one of those little cams in it. If you're staying NA I recommed the 230/236 cam.

I am going with the 236/242 in my 383. Bottom end is pretty similar to yours. I am using the scat 9000 crank, scat pro I beams with 7/16 cap screws, and wiseco forged pistons. The rods, crank, and pistons ran me just under $1000 and the pistons come with rings.

If I were you I would get the 230/236... The 224/230 is perfect for a 350 but I think that you would be dissapointed with the 224/230.
