Taking Alternator apart??

Hey Guys
I am doing the cam/header thing and getting a few things ready to drop off to have powdercoated. I would like to have the 2 casing halfs to the alternator done and need to know if the casing pulls off just by removing the 4 bolts or not. It feels pretty snug. I would hate to screw up a good alternator.
Thanks

If you are not familiar with the guts of one, you better have a manual or something to guide you. The most difficult thing will be getting the pulley off. You need to mark the case halves before taking it apart so you can put it back together the same way. There is also a trick to getting the spring loaded brushes back in.

I never took one apart but I was assuming that their are a couple of brushes in there. That was one of my concerns. If I cann't release the springs from outside the casing how would I get the brushes to fit back around the armature with spring tension on them? Also, I figure it's just like an electric motor in that you can advance or retard the timing by rotating the casing around the armature. Since, the casing nonadjustable I don't think this is a problem though. I can get the pulley off btw. I just wanted to know if the brushes will fly off once I pulled the rear casing off the amature. Thanks for the reply.

You can "pin" the brushes from the outside via a couple little holes that you can poke a paper clip or something through. You will see, once you get it apart. You put the brushes in, then pin them and then put the case together. After the shaft is in it's place you remove the pins to release the brushes. At least that is the way I remember most of them to be.

Yup you're right. Have fun getting the pulley off. I think the shaft has an allen wrench hole in it to assist you.
