Tach just went crazy!!

Ok my tachometer all of a sudden went crazy today....

it was working fine then all of a sudden it glitched a bit, then a few seconds later it was going crazy bouncing from 0-1000RPM

now the car idles fine and runs perfectly... what do you guys think happened??? Is this going to be an expensive fix?

Was the tach the only one that did this. About a year ago, all my gauges started doing this on a trip back from Florida and then the car died. It was the ignition switch under the dash. I am not sure if this is the same as what is happening to your car, but its almost the same symptoms.

My guess..and it is the ever popular guess on this board, is that your opti is going. Your tach readings come off the opti, and one of your sensors is going, or your opti is just going in general. When your tach jumped crazy from 0-1000, did your engine reflect that, or just your tach? When my opti died, it was on the highway, no warning, but it just died...then with the car in gear..a second later it'd restart itself, just come back on..it did that for about 30 seconds before it just died for good.

i fear that it is my opti going... becuase i feel an ever so slight stumbling in my car... when i say slight i mean very slight, before one of my spark plugs was arcing and it was a bad stumble... this is a very tiny stumble always below 2000RPM....

My tach does that occassionally. Mine kinda just freezes at certain points also. But it doesn't do that all the time. And it would just go back to normal if the car had just been sitting for awhile and them restarted. I was told by someone to clean the IAC sensor to see if that would help out my problem any. Good luck

No, I believe my opti is just fine. I'm having no problems with the motor at all and it runs really smooth. My tech just goes nuts sometimes

my car does something like this too, when i'm accelerating and the motor is powering out/stumbling the tach will not go up in a smooth motion, it will go up in a jerky fashion, even though the car is accelerating in a smoother, but slow fashion.
