T56 to TH350 swap

I posted these questions in the drivetrain forum, but got no responses, so I thought I'd give it a try here.

My T56 is toast, and I was considering swapping to a built TH350 to replace it.

I want to know what's involved in the swap, how much of it I can do myself or how much has to be done by someone with the knowhow.

Anyone who's done this please chime in

And I apologize about posting this here, but it's somewhat urgent and I know this forum gets way more traffic than the drivetrain forum.

The swap is easy and I highly recommend it. Get a non lockup case, pick out a valve body if you want something different, or go with the stock if you like it to shift for you. You will need a converter for the th350. Some people have said a M6 crossmember willl work, but I took mine and welded a extension plate with gusets to reach the bolt location on the new tranny. You will also want a th350 with a 9 inch tailhousing so you can use your same driveshaft. Get a new dipstick, as it is obviously different. I went with a Lokar, but take my advice. If you use a Lokar stick, call them and special order one that is about 8 inches longer. It is too short if you dont, and it makes checking it a PITA. Other then that, you simply need to install it. I suggest you cut the useless ears off the case before you install it. They rub on the tunnel and will drive you nuts. I pulled it and cut them off, then put it back. As for the shifter, I have heard you can make the stocker work. I personally went to a Hurst Promatic ratchet shifter. You will need to trim the rear of the console about a inch on the under side to make it fit, and change the shifter boot to one from a manual car. It will look like a stick, but it is actually a 3 speed ratchet. Looks very nice. You will need to wire up a few wires for the neutral saftey switch, and the reverse lights. There are diagrams on the net for that. Its simple to find and do. Other then that, enjoy.
