Synchro Problems ? Take a Look

Drove my friends 95 TA M6 today, noticed that it feels much smoother when i shift his Tranny, also, when down shifting like from 3rd to 2nd at around 40MPH, his slips in second very easily while mine on the other hand is quite difficult (requires more force) and when it does go in mine makes a grinding/rattling sound. I think my synchros are bad/worn/going out. Any ideas ?

I don't have your answer, but I'm having a similiar problem on my 95 formula M6.

Seems that when it's cold, its easier to shift. When its hot out or I've been running a while, it's hard to shift into first or reverse at a stop (reverse is really hard, first, I can feel something "mesh" together when I shift it)

Not sure how that would have happened, Im thinking synchros, but I'd like to know how much work this is to fix or how much for a tranny shop to do it, I don't have the time!

sounds like synchros, heres a tip though, if you cant get it into gear try this, say your trying to downshift into 2nd from 3rd at 40mph, with mine, it wont go into gear easily so heres the tip, with the clutch out and the car in neutral, rev the engine to the RPM range of where the car would be when you put it in gear EX: a 3rd to 2nd downshift at 40mph would put you in the 3K to 4K RPM range) this will help match the engine speed to the rear end/drive train speed making the car go into gear more easily (your basicly doing the synchros job). Another trick is doulbe clutching, if you double clutch during everyday driving, it will greatly save the remaing life of your synchros. Reply me back if you dont know how to double clutch and would like to learn.

what exactly is double clutching.. and why does it save wear and tear on the syncros?

It's not double clutching, it's rev matching.

And for the original poster, try changing the tranny fluid. If that doesnt help check the clutch/PP/TO bearing, hydraulic assembly, and the pilot bushing. If the problem isn't in one of those areas, then it's time for a rebuild.

Throwout Bearing and Pilot bearing are both pretty worn out. I can hear the pilot bearing rattle during Idle while in neutral and i can hear the Throwout Rattle during low revs in initial acceleration. Not quite sure how to check or even what the hydraulic assembly is but i would like to find out.

Double clutchin does infact help save the life of synchros because its doing the work for them. When you double clutch your spinning up the clutch assembly to match the speed of the rear end, hence doing the work for your synchros and saving them life.

Hi guys... i have the same problem that was discribed... where it is very difficult to shift into 1st, and even more difficult into reverse. i found if you mash your clutch to the floor, almost like you feel like you're going to break it, that *helps* but that's definately not the solution. I had my transmission rebuilt and clutch replaced about 1 year ago (30k miles ago). anyway i woul dbe eager to know if anyone has a definate solution to this problem. here's the specs on my car, if it helps..

99 Camaro Z28
M6 - 6 speed
blah blah, minor intake/exhaust/ram air mods

thanks guys
