Switching to non-emission headers

hey guys,

I've removed the driver side manifold, and I just finished the passenger side, but there is a metal tube that is attached to it... I look at my Hooker LTs and I dont see these attaching anywhere.... what do I do about it? What is this metal tube? How do I get rid of it? Will it affect normal operation?

That tube is part of the EGR system. It goes to the back of the intake and allows exhaust gas into the intake manifold when the EGR valve opens. You will need some block off plates to remove it. I found some on EBAy for about $15.00

Can I run the car without block off plates for now? possibly crimp the metal tubing as a temporary fix?

You will have an air leak into the intake when the EGR valve opens. I am not sure how much it actually let's in and if it is enough to make a difference. I would at least pull the vacuum hose off the EGR valve and plug the hose.

At part throttle and while cruising. The EGR system reduces nox emssions as well as reducing combustion camber temps which prevent pre-detenation or "pinging", which casues the computer to retard timing and the engine to lose power.

If you are that worried about waiting for the blockoff plates to arrive, you could always buy a piece of sheetmetal and fab your own.

Just to clairify... on the 1993's, the EGR riser tube and AIR tube for the passenger side of the engine combine behind the intake manifold. Different than the 94-97 LT1's.
