Sweet, my Opti Died!

Well...no I wasn't really all that happy when I finally decided to change it out but some good came of it..

I had developed a horrible low RPM miss, studder, buck, rock, n, role. I had replaced just about half the car and then resorted to taking handfuls of money and let the intake suck it up. Actually...that did kinda help a bit.. So finally I came back to reality and decided it must be my Opti. I was in denial because it seems anytime anyone has any kind of problem the Opti is instantly blamed...I once posted about a strange rattle I had in the rear end and 3 people said it was the Opti..So a friend and I began the joyful task of removing the Opti...Fans off, balancer off, water pump off... Friend:"wait...wheres the opti." Me: "What do you mean wheres the Opti...its right where GM left it!" Friend: "Oh, wait here it is" (Takes screwdrivers and scrapes oily gunk a way) Me: "oh wow man it was covered in Oil...I knew I had an oil leak but damn that's bad" Friend: "Yeh...well when you put in a quart of oil every time you get gas it should raise an eyebrow" Me: "...well it kept the oil clean " So we continue to take off the opti and clean off all the gunk from the timing cover getting everything ready for the new opti. The old opti had gotten so full of gunk that the shaft would hardly even spin freely, and made a lot of noises that made you wonder how the hell it had hung together for the past 6 months. We also found that the Opti wasn't GM, it had a yellow cover on the inside instead of white...not sure what brand that is. Well anyway, we noticed the old opti didn't have the two O rings on the shaft and that's what has been causing my very bad oil leak sense I bought the car...so in a way this wasn't all badbecause I got the oil leak fixed . But, I do think it's funny that peoples Optis die all the time from driving through a puddle and splashing water on it...and mine had oil gushed on it for at least a year when I bought the car hah.

I hope you are not too disappointed when you find out that those oil rings have nothing to do with oil control. If you have a leak, it is somewhere else. I hope you replaced the seal in the timing cover when the opti was out.

First of all, you outta change your signature to include the N.O.S. Wet Kit you got on your TA.

2nd, you forgot the part where I had to remove the airpump bracket to get the waterpump free, then I went ahead and deleted ALL of the air system.

3rd, what about fixing the fan cicuit, that hadn't worked in months. lol

5th(4 is my unlucky number) "fixing" the leaking heater hose.

Lastly, don't let Shoebox worry you, your car is leaking higher than the opti seal. So even if I had changed the opti seal, that would not have stopped the oil leak.

Talk to you tomorrow.

The previous owner could have torn the waterpump seal. I went thru 2 of them till on the 3rd try I got it right. Guess they make that little sleeve for a reason . Very possible it is torn.
