Surging and hunting idle after porting MAF
Well, I did a search to find ways to correct this problem my 94 LT1 has developed after I ported the MAF but to no avail. I initially removed only the screen and the car ran fine without it, a bit stronger on the top end according to my experienced f-body buddy. I went ahead and ported it out too. I noticed a definite increase in power and throttle response, especially on the top end, but the idle went all screwy. It does level out after driving the car for a bit, but cold idle is all messed up, with the engine hunting between 800 and 1200 rpm.
I want to know how to fix this problem. Can I simply reset the ECM? How do I do that WITHOUT disconnecting the battery ( I don't have the antitheft code for my stereo)?
According to most of the threads I have read on this subject, people generally agree it's not a good idea to descreen or port the MAF, especially if you're going for aftermarket ECM tuning. I could get new MAF ends and screen as a last resort, but only as a LAST RESORT.

I think you already know why the idle is messed up-because of the MAF work you did. Some cars don't take to it well, especially with the screen removed. Try putting that back first, if you have not already. Also give the pcm some time to adjust. You might even try resetting the pcm if you have not already, just to clear it's memory of previous block learns.
Another possibility is that you might have damaged the MAF wires. Hopefully that is not the case.

reset the ecm by pullin the fuse in the fuse panel on the side of the dash. bottom row, 3rd from the left i think (look at the diagram on the panel). it wont' affect your stereo...
I dont think reseting the pcm is going to fix the problem but its worth a shot. Like shoebox said... Some lt1's dont respond well to messing with the MAF. Mine didnt throw a code after i descreened it and it ran fine. I put aftermarket ends on and it runs fine still.. I have stock MAF ends if u want em.
The only way i think u could fix the problem is the reprogram your computer to idle higher or put some stock maf ends back in.

sounds like one of those little things you might have learned the hard way. a few years ago everyone was descreening and porting their MAF. but i think the general opinion now is to leave it alone. good luck.
