Summit torque wrench failed, aluminum heads

WELL I BOUGHT A TORQUE WRENCH FROM SUMMIT AND IT DID NOT CLICK AT 36# AND ENDED UP STRIPPED A THREAD FOR TH INTAKE MANIFOLD TO THE ALUMINUM HEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Talked to Summit and they are sending me a new torque wrench (prob same junk) and a re threading kit to make it 7/16" or 1/2" instead of 3/8" .

What are your thoughts on this?

Robb,

Where I work (aircraft stuff), it is standard practice to set a lower torque value than needed for the work, and then "click" the wrench on a welded fastener several times to "exercise" the wrench mechanism before starting in on the work. Then torque the job fastener to that lower value. Re-set the torque wrench to the desired value, and test again on that welded nut, then run the work fastener to the correct torque value. Torque wrenches should also be calibrated on some regular schedule, but you can do that fairly accurately yourself, short of sending the wrench to a (costly) calibration lab.
