stupid air pump HELP!!!

Is there anyway to bypass this? Here is what happens: if air pump is plugged in then fuse blows and I get service engine soon light but my cooling fans run and the car stays cool. Now if I unplug the air pump and install the fuse then I get NO service engine soon light, but now my cooling fans never turn on and the car gets very hot when parked. Is there anyway around this like jumper some wires or something? What did you guys do that took out the air pump? Thanks

Steve

What year is your car.... there are differences between the OBD-I and OBD-II setups.

Re: stupid air pump HELP!!!

With yours being a '94 (same year as mine) you can just yank the air pump out as well as all of the pipes and hoses associated with it. Make sure to leave a good fuse in for the air or you will get a SES light. You'll also have to plug the holes on the exhaust manifolds (M22 X 1.5) and the hole on the air intake.

One thing to consider though (and someone else can probably answer this) is that once you have removed your air pump which serves to heat the catalytic converter you may want to get rid of or hollow it out. I say this because I have heard that having a cat and no pump can cause the cat to clog sooner.

Having no air pump will cause your cats to clog since the cats need the extra air to run correctly.

sounds good. I will just yank the air pump since I've already deleted my cat. What about the car over heating though? I know the fans work because when the ses light comes on the fans run. How hot does your guage have to get b4 the fans kick in? I mean I've watched the needle go past half ways. How close to red does it get b4 they kick in? Thanks everyone

BS i ran a cat for over a year with my heads and cam setup which is running richer than a stock car and i had no air pump. The cat was just fine when i yanked it. Most people agree thats just a fable.

Re: stupid air pump HELP!!!

When the ECM throws a code, it turns the fans on by default. It may be something else (temp sensor?) that is causing the fans not to come on, not the air pump itself.

The stock PCM setting turn the 1st fan on (or low speed - 95 and newer) at 226*F, and the 2nd fan (or high speed) at 235*F.

Im curious... you first posted this problem back in November 04, and you said replacing the fuse with the AIR pump disconnected solved the problem. Now you are indicating the fans aren't working. Has this condition persisted since you first posted the problem, or has something changed recently and the fans stopped working?
