Question stroker question

I know this question is very basic and i did try the search feature but i am still confused in a couple areas on this subject. I know that by using a 400ci crank in combination with 5.7 or 6 inch rods that a 350ci engine is transformed into a 383ci engine. I have also heard alot about a 406ci engine, i assume that it is derived from a 400ci block. Is this motor stroked? Im under the impression that it uses a stock 400 crank along with 5.7 or 6 inch rods. Is it just bored over 6 inches? What does the extra 6 cubic inches do to add the extra power these motors make? How about the 496ci engine that i sometimes hear about? Is that a stroked 454? I also remember hearing about the 302ci in the late 60's early 70's Z-28. I think i was told that they actually used a 327 block with a smaller crankshaft to squeeze or destroke the motor. Does this allow the motor to run a higher compression ratio? It would be great if someone could set me straight on this because whenever i get the money i want to build one of these engines and it would be great if when i told somebody about it i knew what i was talking about.

Your question is all over the place! But in a nutshell:

350 block bored .030" plus 400 crank (3.75" stroke)=383

400 block bored .030" plus 400 crank (3.75" stroke)=406

The 302 was a 327 destroked to allow the motor to compete in competition with Ford 302s. A destroked motor doesn't allow for more compression, but a destroked motor is generally oversquare, and lends itself to higher revs due to decreased piston speed versus longer stroke motors.

Good post...on a side note didn't the Chevy 302 have the 4 in. bore spacing like the 350? So it could also be called a destroked 350? The way I was told was a 327 was a destroked 350 and a 302 was a destroked 327 or 350...just obviously less stroke...shorter stroke or an overly square bore allows the motor to rev higher while piston velocities remain at tolerable levels.
