Stroker Problem..........

I just installed a 383 LT-1 in my 94 z and on the 3rd warm up session it lost ALL oil pressure. We noticed Immediatly and shut down. Guy at the shop thinks its a gear to drive my oil pump. The motor was built by a shop that is suppose to be very good here locally so them leaving something out isnt a huge concern. Any ideas may help tremendously. Thanks, Brian

Re: Stroker Problem..........

Anyone that has ANYTHING that could help me figure this out would be GREAT. I have had my car in the shop for 6 months and its coming down to the wire. ANY ideas that could stop oil flow or give me a 0 oil pressure reading on my guage after a 383 stroker re-build could make me either have to pull the motor BACK out or leave it in. Thanks Alot, Brian Kaiser

Re: Stroker Problem..........

Put a temperary mechanical gauge on it. I've had problems with factory gauges before.

If that's not it, you have to pull the pan and check the pump pick-up and driveshaft or pull the intake and remove/check the pump drive gear.

Re: Stroker Problem..........

Well the intake is being replaced with a new one and the gear is being replaced when that comes off. HE said the motor was clackin from the lifters loosing oil pressure and this happened all of a sudden. He said it was like a switch. The engine shop says he tack welded the pickup in 2 places and a spun bearing is very un-likely beacuse its a brand new motor. Is there any possibility the spring came loose in the pump or something? Anyone know if the pressure release valve is stuck open beacuse the oil PSI was at 60-80 before the problem. Im looking for any other reasons other than a spun bearing and a faulty guage for thisl. Thanks, Brian Kaiser

Drop your oil pan and check out the oil pump. If the pickup is still on there and the mounting bolt is tight then remove the rear main cap and look up into the hole right next to the pass side rear main bolt. There should be a little expansion plug or ball bearing about 1/2" diameter stuck in there. If it came loose then this would cause your problem.

Is that plug also refered to as the pressure release valve?

Re: Stroker Problem..........

I believe that plug segregates filtered and non-filtered oil. If it moves up or down, it will plug the oil passage from the pump to the engine.
