strange problem w/ motor swap
okay here's whats happening. I removed the orig LT1 and I am building it and after I removed it I found a 94 Imp SS motor. I bought it and to this point everyhtings worked great, motor runs awsome runs very strong and sounds good. My problem is the harmonic balancer(which is from the orig motor) sticks out about 1/2 inch past the tensioner. In other words it doesn't go back far enough and as soon as the motor is turned over the belt walks to the back of the balancer(toward the motor). I've tried both balancers same thing. Is the actual hub or whatever, that is on the crank that the balancer bolts to different between the motors? I have the original one in my garage. Does it need to go on if so how do I get the old one off and the new one on? If I don't have to do this what do I do to get the balacer lined up. Please help anyone as soon as this is fixed my car is back in business!
Thanks
Josh

It is the hub. I swapped the motor in my car once before, and someone before me had used a '93 - '95 crank hub on it, and it was a '96 or '97 engine with the reluctor ring for the crank position sensor, and it stuck out a 1/2 inch too far. The '96 and '97 hub is about 1/2 inch shorter than the one used in '95 and earlier, and it is because of the crank position sensor added in '96. This, however, leads me to believe that you're engine is out of a '96 Impala. Try the shorter crank hub. I've got one if you wanna give it a shot. This sounds exactly like the problem that I had with mine though.
BTW, easiest way I've found to pull it in the car, is to first remove the crank bolt, and leave the balancer on. Find a long bolt (about 4 or 5 inches) that is much much thinner than the hole in the crank snout. Make sure it is grade 8 (I've heard people tell horror stories about a bolt collapsing into an 'S' shape inside the crank). Get you balancer puller, position it at the end of the bolt you've placed in the end of the crank, and use the 3 small bolt holes on the BALANCER (not the hub, and not the bolts attaching the balancer to the hub) to pull it. If you need more room to fit a wrench on the end of the puller, just slide the cooling fans up. Good luck.
Okay weird as this seems I do not have the 3 puller holes on my stock balancer so how do pull it off other than using the hub holes? Also I have the stock hub off my car what is the best way to put those on while in the car, a rubber mallat?
