stock rocker help needed asap
ive got a 95 z28, with what im assuming r stock rockers, its been making a funny kinda knocking/clicking/clanking noise, anyways ive got the valve cover off and 6 of the 8 on the pass side or pretty loose, they move side to side and the valve gets off set when i move the rocker. how tight do i need the rockers to be, how much torque, r they supposed to be that loose. any help is greatly appreciated as i need to have this done by the morning
The rocker should move side to side...the two that won't move side to side have pressure on them from the valve being open. As long as there is no gap between the rocker and the pushrod/valve, they should be fine. Are any of the jam nuts loose on any of the rockers?
OK.
The rocker sits on a 3/8" stud which is attached to the head. The rocker arm sits on this stud and above the rocker arm is a jam nut (looks like a regular nut). Inside the jam nut is a poly lock. If you have a loose rocker arm, the poly lock/nut will most likely be loose. The poly lock uses an allan wrench (I want to say a 7/32" but I'm not certain). Check that both the nut and the poly lock are tight.
Next, check for any excessive play in the rocker arms. If there is a gap between the rocker arm and the valve/pushrod, you may have a loose rocker, collapsed lifter, bent valve or bent pushrod...but it's most likely a loose rocker. If there is no upward/downward play your rockers are most likely OK.
Describe the noise a little better if you can.

Start the car and tighten them ones making the noise until they stop making the clacking, then take it about 1/2 turn extra and see if that does it
