Stock Exhaust Or not

How big is the stock pipe from the converter to the muffler?? I know that the bends aren't the best but it still looks like it will flow good. I was thinking of just getting a better muffler.

Re: Stock Exhaust Or not

Stock intermediate pipe is 2.75" diameter; a cat back system bumps this up to 3". The size difference sounds small, but if you calculate the area, it bumps the available flow up by 19%. No real gain if the car is stock, but if you plan for big mods later, it's helpful. A cheaper way to get gains at the track is installing a cut-out.

A cat back system is replacing both the muffler and the intermediate pipe. Mufflers are really a personal preference; you can do a search on mufflers and get some opinions on who's got the best flow. I like the tone of my Flowmaster.

I run a stock I-pipe with crappy Hooker shorties. Not sure how much of an improvement I would see with a catback.

I hit 12.46 @ 113mph with only a 1.83 60'.

Re: Stock Exhaust Or not

Does anyone know how much long tubes weigh *with the y pipe* compared to the stock manifolds and stock y pipe? When I took my manifolds off I was amazed on how heavy *obviously it is cast iron* it was, as well with the huge cat! Anyone know a weight difference between the 2 systems?

Don't let any hatred of Flowmaster steer you from the fact that it IS a better sounding muffler. IMO, it responds the best (sound-wise) to other exhaust mods (ie: no cats, LT's). It doesn't rasp, though drone is present - actually doesn't seem as bad with LTs and no cats however. When you want more power, you aren't going to want a muffler anyway since any is restrictive, so throw a cutout on. Then you can get the sound/power needed, unless you don't like the sound of the cutouts (though they aren't REALLY for sound..).

Re: Stock Exhaust Or not

I am mainly going to do daily driving with this car. Thats why Im after a good sound. Just enough to get some attention from the rubber necks when I smoke the tires while still rolling. Still the sound of a cut out is the best I know, But what is the best place to install one? On a side note I thought that I read somewhere that a 93 could'nt use an lt4 km. Since im new to this fourm thing, could someone let me know what km means . Some day I won't be a newbie anymore, but until then and even after I join your ranks you all rock Thanks for all of this cool info. It drives my wife nuts.

Re: Stock Exhaust Or not

km is knock module. dont worry about it 93s dont care for those things LOL

as for cat back, better off spending your money on a FULL cat back setup. 93s respond very well to bolt ons. if possible also try to upgrade your stock manifold/y pipe to a header back setup.

a cai (cold air induction) will also improve thigns greatly.

also i personally think the flowmaster sounds the best. if you want to take some of the drone out of it add in a 22 inch resonator (wont restrict the flow) to the intermediate pipe if your having a exhaust shop install it.

the hooker cat backs also get a lot of praise as well, you may want too look into that setup as well.
