Stock alternator

What is the stock alternators amp rating on an LT1?? I am having some either battery or alternator charging problems. When the car is in motion the alternator charges sufficient to operate all of the electronics. While idle the charge drops into the danger zone and stays there even while no electronics besides the radio are running. While idle the windows wont roll up or down anymore because of such a low charge and the headlights flicker if they are on. I have a powerful sound system but even when it isnt turned up the charge drops. Do i have a charging problem with my alternator or my battery? If it's the alternator I wanted to get a 140amp alternator from Summit Racing. If not, I'm going to buy a new battery and a capacitor for the sound system.

It depends on the year. 1993s had 124amp alts and most all others had 140amp ones (RPO KG9). The 124amp ones use a bolt to attach the battery lead and have a metal fan. The 140amp ones use a stud and nut for the battery lead and have a mostly plastic fan.

I would imagine you have the 124 amp unless someone changed it before you. Check what it looks like based on the description above. I am 99% sure the 140 amp will swap right in.
