Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

I have heard of guys breaking theirs with the 2nd gear shift. Its all about sticky tires. Unfortunately if you ever wanna run good times at the track youll need those sticky tires.

What I find interesting was the GMHTP issue where they did the LT1 VS LS1 shootout. And there were people cutting 11's and I think even 10's on 10 bolts. And they were running slicks. I guess they must say prayers before each run

They probably has automatic trans... they tend to be easier on the 10-bolt.

I put in a street twin and didn’t even get to break it in before my rear blew then I had to wait 4 months to get the cash to buy a 12 bolt. Good thing I have another car. Bottom line is if the car is your daily driver and it will be a long time before you can get he cash to buy a new rear or replace anything else that results from the cam upgrade then don’t do it. The 10 bolt is a pos and will break on ever an stock motor. After my experience if I were you I would put the cam money toward a 12 bolt. Whatever you decide to do I hope it works out for you.

I could not agree more. This guy is right on.

Ok.. I am definately seeing all your points of view. I don't disagree... while I love the thought of 330+rwhp... I also like the idea of making my car strong and durable.. not to mention I could then run slicks and have 3.73s or 4.10s instead of my M29 3.23s.

Is there no common way to get a 12 bolt for less than like $2k?

Also.. I dynoed 240rwhp and 297tq. Since then I removed my cat, removed a VERY dirty air filter for a clean K&N stock replacement, changed plugs and wires - fixing a stumbling issue I had, did a throttle body bypass, pert shampoo mod... maybe more... I forgot. So I think I should be at least like 250-255rwhp NOW. Sound probably accurate?

Anyway... if I add longtubes, putting me prolly more like 270-280rwhp... if I added a 12bolt, 3.73/4.10, and et streets... where do you think that would put me 0-60?

Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

Hmm I think you'll have a better chance of blowing the stock clutch, as long as you don't put traction to the car I think you'll be fine. After I put in my cam the clutch went but hte SPEC II was an awesome upgrade. Anyway with my heavy as vert longtubes, CAI, true duals, and 410 gears I managed low 13's, with the cam I should have touched 12's for sure. I could have hit 12's without cam with traction as my best 60 ft on the stock tires was 2.3, but I did'nt want to risk blowing up the rear. Unfortunetley I never got to see what she would do with the cam. So with enough horsepower you can go pretty fast, and still use yur stock rear. Honestly it could break without any modes, so I would just take the chance and be easy with it and see how long it will last. I wouldn't dump money into something that isn't broke. You could even find a nice used rear with 4.10 gears for cheap, that what I did, paid 400 bucks it had relocation brakets welded on and studs with the aluminum cover.-this was a 10 bolt, but it held up fine at the track, with poor traction.

Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

You will never beable to get enough traction to blow your rear end if you stick to street tires.
I hope you mean w/ his transmission, because w/ around 350 rwhp at the track I launched at 2750rpms. I dropped the clutch w/ drag radials and snapped the 10 bolt first try, 3.42 stock 10 bolt stock gears everything. So, it is very possible, I wasn't even launching the **** outta it either... I do have a spec stage 2 kevlar and a rebuilt transmission if that makes any difference, but I doubt it.

YES IT WILL BREAK, YES YOU WILL BE W/OUT A CAR FOR 3 MONTHS LIKE ME!

if you are as unlucky as me that is, or actually try and get better than a 2.25 60' time at the track... especially since the age of your rearend is 12 yrs old, and mine is a 96, so its only 9 yrs old (or so).

What i should have said is that I didnt screw up my rear with 400 RWHP.

Yes you can blow it, completely stock cars have blown it as someone said.

This does increase your chances, but its not an accident waiting to happen, in my opinion.

Edit- i dont consider drag radials street tires

Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

my rear end has held up to ~50 3000RPM launches on 245/50/16 nitto drags so far. I am still running 3.42 gears with my 6-speed, and i plan on getting 4.10 come spring. The 10-bolt is a funny creature, some of them can go 11's (which is close to where i'll be come spring), and some will blow up with a stock mid 14 second car. Thats why i am just gonna stop worrying about it and drive my car. HOWEVER, i don't plan on beating on my car too much after i get the 4.10's. I am plan on getting to the track, making a coupla 12.4 or better runs, and then taking it easy the rest of the summer until i save up for a 12-bolt next winter. I just hope my rear will handle ~10 launches with 1.9x 60' times. I just want to be able to say my car runs mid 12's or better

BTW, i can get the gears and rebuild kit and have them installed for really cheap through my work, so thats why i am buying these gears and only having them in for one summer. I say this cuz i can just see someone saying 'why would you spend the money on gears in the summer, just to throw them away when you buy a 12-bolt come winter.'
