Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

I plan on Pacesetter LTs this spring, and maybe a 227/233 cam w/ 1.6s this summer...

Will I have any problems with the stock 10 bolt? I have a M29 93 T/A... so my gears are 3.23 stock on the 10-bolt.

I CANNOT afford a 12-bolt, and I CANNOT afford to have a dead car.

Just dont launch the **** outta it, especially on sticky tires. You should be fine.

If you dont beat on it, It wont break. The more you drop the clutch, the faster you will break your rear. I myself didnt break my rear untill I got the Street Twin. That clutch WILL break your rear. I drove it approx 800 miles until on day my rear locked up and my DS snapped. I was in 3rd gear accelerating slowly :-/ Before I swapped to my 12 I never dropped the clutch, so if you ever get the ST, start looking for a 12bolt immediatly. I was fortunate enough to buy one from a board member for a good deal.

I have that same cam... its awesome. Makes great power at 3500 and insane power at 4k. If you floor it was 4k in 1st, you spin as if your at idle and when you floor it at 4k in 2nd, you just take off like a bat out of hell. Thats without LT's... so just imagine the possiblities... :-D

I thot you could drop the clutch all you wanted as long as ur tires were not too sticky. So with this setup, and stock clutch... what is my SAFEST choice for rear tires? I want performance... but not at the risk of my rear... I am a premed major... and I will NOT have loads of money to fix things that just tear up w/ excess torque.

So with that in mind... more info?

EDIT: ALSO.. is this cam gonna rev to rpms that are dangerous for my motor's lifespan? 93s have pink rods.

Yeah... but autos don't really bang on the 10-bolts nearly as much I don't think... friend of mine is running flat 12s on his A4 10-bolt w/ MT ET Streets!

What tires do you guys use?

Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

I tell people this all the time if you can’t afford the mod to make the car handle the power don't do the mod. If you have a A4 you MIGHT be ok for a while but not forever. Some people will tell you that they did this and they did that and had no problems but there are those who did have problems. I put in a street twin and didn’t even get to break it in before my rear blew then I had to wait 4 months to get the cash to buy a 12 bolt. Good thing I have another car. Bottom line is if the car is your daily driver and it will be a long time before you can get he cash to buy a new rear or replace anything else that results from the cam upgrade then don’t do it. The 10 bolt is a pos and will break on ever an stock motor. After my experience if I were you I would put the cam money toward a 12 bolt. Whatever you decide to do I hope it works out for you.

A cam will decrease the lifespan of many parts. Just because your tires dont hook doesn't mean you not doing any damage however if your tires do hook

I broke my 10-bolt twice, both times on street tires. First the posi-unit and
the second time the gears. Much more fun to beat on it with the 9 inch!!

You will never beable to get enough traction to blow your rear end if you stick to street tires.

Im running around 400RWHP thru a M29 and a 3.42 rear with a spec stage 4 clutch on my stock 10 bolt. Just dont get crazy with your launches and shifts and you will be fine.

Not true, I know a person who blew his 10 bolt with everything being stock.

Re: Stock 10-bolt w/ cam?

Most of the time its the drivetrain shock that blows rear ends out. Since manuals can have a more violent shock run through the drivetrain, they go through them more then autos do. Sometimes wheel hop is culprit.
