Steering linkage install

I removed the steering linkage to install my pacesetter LTs. I removed both bolts but did not need to slide the top part of the linkage to remove the bottom part from the steering gear. I tried putting it back on and cannot seem to get it back on at the bottom. I have used a screwdriver to spread the bottom part out and its about a 1/2 inch or so from going on.

My question is which way should I slide the top part of the linkage to get it loose? Toward the firewall or toward the gear?

When I did mine, a buddy and myself took turns kinda sliding it on and off at the top and both ends kinda slid themselves into place, I put the top on first, then kept taking it half off and sliding it back on while my buddy kinda pulled down in a twisting motion on the bottom half. Sounds odd im sure but it worked twice in a row without much hassle at all.
