Startup Problems, Help!!!!
Startup Problems, Help!!!!
OK, this is intermittent, but becoming more frequent. When I turn the key, all I get is a click at the starter solenoid. My scanmaster is starting out with 12.9 volts and with the key switched engaged it's dropping to 11 and 11.1 volts. It is on it's second starter in a week and I really don't think that's the problem considering it is doing exactly the same thing. I'm not getting any codes. My wires look good. The nuetral safety switch is about the only thing left to change that I can think of. Also, the electrical system is checking good at Autozone. Is there any kind of relays or something that I'm not aware of, that will disengage the startup process? I've been turning the key on, letting the ding, ding, ding, ding, ding, listening for the fuel pump, then trying to turn it over. Click, is all I get. It's my only car, please help!
Re: Startup Problems, Help!!!!
OK, got home from work and she still wouldn't start. Took apart the above wiring and there was no corrosion, just nice shiny surfaces. Borrowed my neighbors battery charger/jumper. Hooked it up and let it sit a bit, it was showing 10 volts. Put it in jumpstart mode, she fired right up. Started it about 20 times, removed the jumper, started it twice, third time- CLICK! Tried a few more times with clicks. Hooked up the jumper and it fired right up. Even though I'm showing good volts (with scanmaster), is it possible to have a bad cell or something strange with the battery?

Re: Startup Problems, Help!!!!
Check the voltage across the battery when cranking the engine to see that it does not drop below 11 volts. Don't rely on scanning it. Then once the engine is running, confirm the voltage across the battery is around 14 volts. Any lower and have the battery tested for it's ability to take a charge and also to carry a load. If at that point the battery is good AND the wiring is ok, if the voltage across the battery is still lower than 14 volts, the alternator is going/has already gone bad.

OK, I'm on my 3rd starter, 4rth alternator, new battery, and new positive and negative wires. And that's just in the last month. I need to know what kind of oddball things will cause this. I'm running out of ideas. Shoebox, Brent, you guys seen anything like this? HELP!!!
Oh yeah, it won't even jump now. Just the single click at the starter solenoid.
OK, charged it for half an hour and it started right up off the battery. We'll see this evening.

Re: Startup Problems, Help!!!!
You have a short some were in the electrical system, with the key switch
engage and your showing 11 volts at the battery start pulling fuses one
at a time and see if the voltage suddenly increases at the battery if it does
your short is in that circuit, start checking from there.

I tried pulling fuses, like the above post suggests, couldn't find anything.
I just replaced the neutral start backup switch, I'm getting the same click, volts are only dropping to around 11 while the starter is engaged and clicks.
Currently I have a brand new Pro Am starter, is it possible that I need shims on a new starter? The click is more of a clunk. It sounds like the starter engages the flywheel and almost immediately stops. Still no codes. Someone out there has to have had the same experience. Please help.

Try hand turning the engine alittle then try again. Sounds silly, but it worked for me yesterday. It was the one and only time i tried that so it might have been just a coincedence. I will follow this thread as my car sporadicly does that and i changed every thing to and it still does it, so keep up with the reports
