Starting problems. repeatable

Each morning I leave the house, start the car, and drive to work. No problem.

Once the car is warm, consistently, the first time I turn the key, it turns over once and then nothing. Just like the battery is flat. I then turn the key again and it catches and starts. This pattern repeats, until the car sits a long time and cools off.

At the track last Sunday, the patter kept up but the performance of the starter continually degraded throughout the day. The next morning it was fine again.

The alternator and starter are both stock units with close to 200 miles. These are not overwhelmingly expensive items but if I don't need to replace both I would rather not. Any suggestions? Oh yea, battery is only a year old and rated for a corvette 454.
