starter Question
I ahve heard it go both ways. some you can sneak it out some have no been able too. from what I understand that size and shape of an LT4 replacment starter is able to slip in and out. you might look into that for a replacment for next time

Yes, with an A4 single cat, the Y pipe has to come off.. I even partially disassembled the starter in place [knowing the studs on Y pipe were going to break off..]
Also, these starters the solenoid does NOT come off either..
Fortunately, I had a set of shortys that I am putting on, and the flanges on those will come off a lot easier than a stock Y pipe will in future.. [no studs just 2 bolts each side]
There's 2 bolts on the starter [ and 2 wires] 3 nuts, on studs, on each side of the stock Y pipe to the stock exhaust manifolds[ and the few bolts by the cat to catback area] have fun [I sure didn't]...
I just removed mine a couple hours ago on stock manifolds and Y-pipe... It's a pain to remove, BUT I got mine out without removing the Y-pipe... I ended up turning the starter around and getting it out that way... I couldn't get it out by just unbolting it and pulling it straight out for whatever reason... I was able to pull it out between the transmission lines and torque converter/flywheel... I had to unbolt a bracket that held the trans lines to the oil pan so I could move the lines enough to pull it out though... So it can be done that way, but it's a tight squeeze.
