When mine went, I went to the local NAPA, picked up a new solenoid, and replaced it with the starter still in the car.

Seems like you pop those to bolts and solenoid will fall off. This is on my new starter and on the one that i just pulle dout of my car. Maybe they were both remaned by the same company??? Its just 2 bolts on the end of the solenoid opposite of where the wires are hooked too. Mines a duralast rebuild from autozone.
That looks like what my 95 stock starter has.

Wish MINE had come off with 2 bolts.. It would have saved MUCH work last month when I had to remove stock Y pipe, broke one stud off, then put headers on rather than fight the studs... basically all from a solenoid failure[even tried to disassemble the starter motor to get it out of there with the Ypipe still on.. WOULD NOT come out with that solenoid on there, and the solenoid does NOT come off my stock LT1 starter..]
I sent Spinner pics to post maybe he hasn't gotten to that yet..

Ummmm is your car a T56, causing you to have to drop the Ypipe to get the starter out? Cause on my A4 95 T/A all i had to do was undo the 4 bolts holding the flywheel dust sheild off and wiggle it around the Ypipe. Went right in and out. Are T56 cars different???

If you mean me, I have an A4..
No way that was coming out [even partially disassembled, I tried that too.. I actually disassembled the 'motor' part of the starter off it.. note the purty paint in the pic..lmao still wouldnt come out]
Ypipe and trans cooler lines are in the way[and the trans cooling lines are hard to get the transmission ends off with trans in place..] Trust me it wouldn't come out, I tried everything..

I am pretty confident that mine is the origninal. It is definitely a different style. I don't have any pictures with great detail of that part.

Mine looks like this one.

Wish mine would have looked like that.. I can't believe there are so many variations of the LT1 starter, especially if they haven't been swapped or serviced/rebuilt..
My first thought was that the 'removeable' solenoid ones were rebuilt at some time in the past and that's how the rebuilders take it off..[various methods..]
Rob, are you sure yours was never serviced?
Also, GM lists the housing as including the solenoid[for service] I didn't bother pricing it, since the LT4 starter was 160 shipped and new, I got that..[ the solenoid on THAT does not come off either]
Thanks!
Charlie

I bought the car with ~22k on it, so I think the starter is the original one. I have never changed it.

That's what mine also looks like. I bought mine with 60k, so it COULD be the original one...not really sure.
