starter problems
starter problems
Just finished my engine swap and went to start it up and the starter just grinds. It catches the flywheel moves it about 6 teeth and then it grinds and catches again. It is the same starter and flywheel off my old engine. The only difference with the two is the block is out of a vette at least thats what im told. Its a four bolt lt1 block. Any ideas i was guessing it just wasnt in all the way but im not sure how it couldnt have been. The teeth on the starter a ground down from me trying to start it and pulling it off and redoing it so i have a new starter. Ideas before i fry this one? another thing that shouldnt matter is the starter bolts disapeared and i had to buy replacements they are not the exact same but it doesnt look like there is any movement.

Re: starter problems
With the bottom cover off the bellhousing check to see if the starter gear is coming out far enough the engage flywheel or if the teeth are too far away from it. Are there any shims between starter and block? If there are, try removing them.
Re: starter problems
no shims im charging the battery but not looking promising the teeth are set in the flywheel and are makeing contact no slipping any more just not spinning the flywheel over enough to start it maybe a quarter of a turn on the flywheel is all im getting
Re: starter problems
yes with heads on and plugs inhave to use a ratchet but it turns little more info its a lt4 block i think but lt1 flywheel now i triedthe lt4starter but it did nothing any other ideas
Re: starter problems
just checked voltage on both ends battery and starter and getting right at 12 volts and nothing the lt4starter just clicks thelt1 starter turns it over a little but not enough to start it then it catches and grinds
