Starter problem!

Ok so after swapping my blown lt1 out of my 95 z for a lt1 out of a 92 vette when i start it,it makes a high pitch noise like the starter is too close. It works fine but is just loud.On my way home from work today i stopped at autozone to c if they use the same starters in the 92 vette and the 95 z28 camaro and sure enough they are DIFFERENT. DId the four bolt main blocks use a dif starter or does mine just need a shim or something.ANy help would be great thanks.

High pitch whine is from improper clearance. Unfortunately with enclosed "nose cone" starters, there is no way of clearancing the proper shims other than trial and error.

If you had an open nosed starter like this:

Then all you would need to do is place a paper clip between the gears and shim or in the case of this starter, clock it with the front bolts (see the picture) until there is only room for the clip between the teeth of one gear and the valley of the other gear.

Remember if the gear is too far from the flex plate, shim the bolt furthest away from the flex plate. And if too close, shim the one closest to the flex plate.
