Starter help (A4)

Hey guys,
I need your opinion on as to whether or not my starter is going bad.I had been at the house for 15-20 minutes and went back out to leave, when I tried to start the car it acted like the battery was dead.Tried to start it and I heard it clicking with some sort of smell coming from the engine compartment.Decided to jump it off and it did the same thing, but eventually fired up and then I saw a little smoke coming from underneath.Turned it off and waited a few minutes and it fired right up.Waited 5 more minutes and it started doing it again.Saw a little smoke that time also.Looked underneath the car and everything looks good and tight,so I am assuming that it is bad. Now,if it is,should I just remove the pipe to drop it or remove the trans lines and bell housing. Not sure how hard the housing would be to get off.Any advice will be appreciated, planning on fixing it tomorrow.

The bellhousing is integral to the transmission. You can't remove it. I'll just pretend you meant to say "inspection cover."

It's been about 9 years since I changed my starter with stock manifolds, but with an automatic you're definitely going to need to remove one or the other.

Maybe that's it.I just read in another post that the bell housing was removed to make it easier to drop down.Trying to decide if I want the aggravation or just take it to my mechanic.
