Starter help

Hey guys i'm really getting tired of Breaking Starters. I put my car in the garage today and pulled the starter beause it wouldnt start and the housing is broken. This is the second starter i broke in 3 months. on the first one I broke the Soliniod off. now this one broke the Snout off and broke the housing on it to hell. What can i look for to keep from breaking another one. Mods are in my sig and I'm running Stock compression. Stock bottom and everything.

Thanks in advance,
Steven

Where are you getting these starters? Do they have warranties?
Even the refurb stuff usually holds it's own better than that.

When you bolt it up, are you using shims at all? And are your torquing the bolts down properly?
Anything else we should know? (stripped bolt holes? non-standard bolt? Flywheel got all it's teeth?)

the first starter came in the car when i bought it from LT14Life on here December of 07. second one came out of my 94 that was an automatic. No shims ever used one either starter. The starter out of my 94 i bought at oreilly with lifetime warrenty. No messed up bolt holes, Bolts are torqued properly, Stock bolts, and flywheel has all teeth.

You determine whether the starter needs shims by measuring the clearance between the tip of the starter tooth and the root of the ring gear. Using a standard paperclip wire is usually good enough a measurement on clearance. If you don't check it, you will never know if the teeth are engaging properly.
