Starter... HELP!!!

Ok this is going to be kinda hard to explaine but i just got my engine back into my car and i put the trans (a4) in and every thing. now when i go to turn the car over, it will turn over twice then the starter will grind. what would cause this to happen?

we took the starter out and it engages all the way with power to it.

but when its on the car it only goes 1/2 way over the fly wheel theeth? is that normal

What should i do ???

You need to get under there and watch as the starter is engaged. You might need to put some shims on it.

Ok we shimed it and that didnt work and the starter is engaging
so we though it might be te flex plate so we droped the trans took the flex plate off and that is fine so we put it back on and turned it over without the trans bolted up and it was fine.. so then we were bolting the torque converter to the flex plate and there is a 1/4 inch gap inbetween the coverter and the flex plate sp if we were to tightin the bolt it would pull the flex plate back and cause the stater to grind because the gears are not meshing right...... WHAt should i do to fix this ?????

HELP PLEASE NEED ANswer FAST TRYING TO GET THIS DONE TONIGHT

Any chance there is a pilot bushing in the back of the crank that is not letting the torque converter snug in ?

The converter should fit up to the flexplate without any gaps where the flexplate to converter bolts go. If the converter will not push far enough forward to do this, you need to pull the tranny back and find out why.

The center nub of the converter must have room to fit into the middle of the crank flange. If you changed cranks, it might have a pilot bushing in there, like I mentioned before. The bushing will need to be removed.
