Starter Cable

I burned up a starter not too long ago, and was wondering what the chances are that I fried the starter wires too. I put a new starter on it and tried cranking and I can't get it to crank for more than 3 secs. I put another battery on it and the same thing. Is there a way with jumper cables that I can bypass the starter hot wire? I tried just using an external battery and hooked up the pos. to the starter and grounded the rest. Then when I tried to turn it over, it just clicked. I would like to test and see if this is it before I try to replace them. Any help is appreciated.

Thanks,
Benji

Re: Starter Cable

Yes there is a way to do this. I saw my mechanic do it to my car just recently.

It was actually just two wires and a button. He clamped one to the terminal on the battery and the other on the starter. Then pressed the button to engage the engine.

Be sure your battery is well charged too, something simple like that could cause the starter to not crank right.

Re: Starter Cable

I don't have a button though. I made sure the battery was charged. I starts any car I put in it. It just only cranks mine like 3 revs and then starts clicking. Even when I put a second battery on it. How did he compensate for the starter ground. I can hook a jumper cable straight from the battery to the starter, but it won't engage because of the solenoid. I even tried arcing the two posts on the starter, but nothing. I'm running out of ideas. Thanks for the info.

Re: Starter Cable

Anyone else have any ideas. Will the jumper cable from the battery to the starter not work because it is not tight enough? It just clicks. It seems the starter wire just has too much resistance in it and is drawing to much voltage. Any info is greatly appreciated.
