hello,1st post here.after motor rebuild one day car wouldnt start, all id get was kind of a vroom sound coming from the starter. A buddy of mine beat on the starter and it eventually started so i replaced starter and that worked fine for about 3 weeks.Yesterday i go to start car and same thing, just a kinda vroom sound coming from starter no clicking.Think i just got a bad starter from pepboys?

Kinda sounds like it. Probably a rebuilt eh? If you have juice to the solenoid and the starter spins but doesn't engage the fywheel, either it doesn't fit right or the bendix is boogered. JMHO I would contact a starter shop and ask their opinion based on your observation.

Also: are you certain that you did not damage a tooth or two on the flywheel during the rebuild/install. If the fywheel has damaged teeth and the starter gear happens to stop opposite that damaged area, the starter would not engage the wheel at that point. You might test this by turning the engine over by hand or pushing it a bit and see if the starter will engage at some other point (s) on the flywheel. Food for thought.

+1 for checking the flywheel teeth. Did you make sure the starter was shimmed right?
