SS hood

I have an SS hood about to go and I'm going to make it functional but my uncle whos been a body man for 30 years said to leave it nonfunctional because in the rain water will get into my engine. I have a 1993 Z28 and was wondering if anyone has had trouble with a functional SS hood getting water in your engine?

Thanks

Re: SS hood

When you cut the hole on the back you need to leave a lip. That way it will act as a baffle and keep the water from coming in. I don't think i can really take a pic with my hood on

Re: SS hood

There shouldnt be any problem with water gettign into the airbox.

If you go to www.tbyrne.com and go to the LT1 section, then click on hoods, down in the Suncoast Creations section you can order an airbox to make a SS hood functional. Its $300 though... it'd be more cost effective to run a traditional intake like the Lingenfelter, Moroso or SLP.

Re: SS hood

I think I'll leave a lip on it just to be safe. But how much of one? If it's to big it will rob me of air but if it's to small I could get water in it. So how thick and how tall should it be? ANy help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

Re: SS hood

What SteveO is suggesting is leave the SS hood non-functional, and get a cold air intake... it'll work just as good.

Re: SS hood

What's that 1/4" lip going to do for the water blowing in the hole ya cut or splash from other cars.

Re: SS hood

unless you drive the nose and hood of your car into a lake or pool you are not going to suck up enough water to lock up your motor. back in the day (60-70) it was a trick to remove carbon from the motor, getting a squirt bottle and spraying lightly with water.

Re: SS hood

I use to have a 1973 (and 1970) Trans Am with the rear facing shaker hood. I use to watch the rain roll off the top of the scoop and shoot back into the engine. Not only was it fun to watch but the engine actually seemed to run better.

By the time it passes through the air filter and into the intake, it's just a vapor anyway. Not a problem.
