SS airbox/hood clearance?

Hello. I'm new to the forum. I have a stock '94 Z28 in my garage that I've owned for 3 years and enjoyed as a summer cruiser/once in a while track car.

But I think its time to really wake up the beast. I've got plans to do some simple, affordable performance upgrades (for now) and I need some advice/input/help from guys who have done this before and know about Camaros.

I want to put a 4" cowl induction hood scoop on the car (see link). Its from Glasstek in Illinois. However, I also want to use the cowl as the intake source for the engine. I thought of buying the SS airbox from either SLP or ASCD and installing it, hoping it would clear the hood.

Has anyone done or seen anything like this? Suggestions? I want to improve the engine's breathing here. I could just go buy the matching SS hood, but I don't know who's a quality supplier (SLP? Suncoast? ASCD?). Plus, I like the look and functionality of the cowl.

I'd appreciate your help. I have other questions, but I'll save those for future threads. Thanks

Re: SS airbox/hood clearance?

I would not get the factory SS airbox. IMO, stick with just a good ole K&N FIPK or similar. I have a 1996SS and have a few bud's with real SSs. EACH of them (including myself) have removed the factory SS airbox and replaced it with a K&N FIPK. The factory SS airbox is too restrictive to consider it as a performance gain IMO... maybe a gain over stock but not a gain over an FIPK. Some guys have tested the FIPK and have got better results with it over the SS airbox. This test was done on a road race course with around a 130 mph long straight. The guy consistently got a higher mph (clocked with radar gun) using an FIPK over the SS airbox and this is when the SS "ram air" should perform at its best!

The FIPK is better? Really. Thanks for the info. That would solve my problem of trying to make the SS airbox fit.

BTW, cool website Brent

Does anyone else have the FIPK and can speak for its performance gains over stock?
