1.7 RR''s + Supporting Parts

So I'm going to go ahead and do Scorpion NSA Rockers. I know I need Hardened Rods 7/16. Can someone please send me a list of part numbers for rockers, rods, springs, studs and guide plates. Or correct me if I'm wrong as well. I want to do this mod, install what I have in my storage as well and put it on the dyno. I'm shooting for 310rwhp on motor and going to run 100-125 shot wet. I know I might have clearance issues with the valve covers heard that certain areas inside would need grinding. I've done some research but with a newer thread maybe enough have done it to get new experiences of what works and doesnt.

Re: 1.7 RR''s + Supporting Parts

I have 1.7 in my 97 LT1 comp cams mag roller rockers and for them you just need to bend the lip in for the support so it goes between the rockers. DO NOT do that to the whole support webbing in factory covers. They will be shot at that point and leak. But shouldn't have any problems lift wise either.

I ended up going to aftermarket covers and the bolts for them were about 6 threads to long...grinder time.

Re: 1.7 RR''s + Supporting Parts

Thank you, so far I got these prices from summit.

1. Scorpion 1026 1.7RR $249.97
2.Comp 26918 Springs $180.97
3.Retainers 787-16. $51.97
4.TFS 7.2 3/8 Pushrods. $99.00
5.TFS Guide Plates. $49.97
6.ARP Rocker Arm Studs $49.17
7.Stock Seats and Locks. ?????? Not Sure

About $830 in parts atleast. With other miscellaneous probably over 900. Like gaskets, seats and locks .I'm sure I'm missing something or things. Trying to figure out this seems to be higher in parts then just swapping a cam with 1.6 RR's. Labor will be higher on a cam install for sure maybe that will offset things in the end. Just don't want to touch the motor really wanted 1.7RR's but even having the money I can't justify that type of spending on Rockers, Maybe I'm wrong.

Those were the parts I used. A lot of people use a drop in spring that uses the stock hardware and a 1.6 s/a rocker. Then you only need the springs and rockers.

Scorpion anything is not "quality"...you often get what you pay for

26918 springs...install at 1.800". You need to have heads pulled and sent to a machine shop to mill down the spring pockets or the 918's will be installed at 1.7xx" height. Not horrible but my point is just throwing in parts that are designed for different installed height than you can with stock heads, using low grade RR is a recipe for failure. 918's specifically are known to break. I have had it happen even installed on heads at 1.800" height with a cam that was spec by Comp to use 918's

IMHO I would go with a Comp 1:6 RR. If you are not spinning the motor past 6k RPM than SA are OK. Otherwise go NSA and use the ISKY adjustable guide plates to get perfect RR alignment vs a fixed guideplate. Use .080 thick wall PR. TrickFlo are not much $ but good

If you are still keeping the stock cam then Alex offers a budget spring kit with good reports. It is a drop in plug & play spring kit.

Re: 1.7 RR''s + Supporting Parts

Recipe for disaster ? I'm well aware of a couple early entry level rocker failures. The race series however, is an extruded billet piece just like any other top aluminum rocker manufacturer. I've got 7 years on mine without issue. My 26918 springs have been on for 12 years and were set up at 1.740"
The guide line that Comp has on the spring is just that. Setting the spring at 1.800" will give you 125# on the seat and .600" lift. It doesn't mean you have to run them at 1.800".

yes many do set up 918's at the lower installed height as you did. with smaller cams this is generally not a problem even though setting the spring up that low will get you to coil bind if using a higher lift cam. On a stock LT1 cam you will be good although most run a 1:6 RR vs 1:7

at 12 years on the 918's you may be on borrowed time depending on mileage (over 20k). Might want to pull a few and do spring test to see if pressure has eroded, especially if you have the blue stripe 918's

I ignored the fact that valve springs are a wear item. At 20k mi I had a 918 break but fortunately did not suffer the typical motor carnage as a result. The retainer kept the spring together but when I puled it to do a spring pressure test...it was two pieces.

I installed Lunatti springs recommended by Lloyd Elliott.

If you are happy with your Scorpion RR great. They are regarded as low tier in many circles. I know the 427 SBF Cobra guys had chronic failures with them as I saw many fail at track events with those guys. They were the extruded AL ones you describe. All the guys I know switched to Comp or Lunatti RR and have since had no issues. I believe Rousch (who builds the SBF 427's for the Cobra clone cars) stopped using the Scorpions. YMMV

BTW, doing a LT1/4L60E transplant in a 89 Jag sounds cool. Bet it surprises quite a few cars at the track :-)
