Spent $1500 on LT1 & Still runs like Crap!

Hey, My name is Rhandy and this is the first time posting a thread. I own a 1996 Lt1 Z28 and it runs like ****. I was driving the car one night and it just dies. So, then I jump it off and it starts, but I didn't make it 200 feet down the road before it dies again. After that the car wouldn't start. The next day my dad goes to pick it up, but couldn't get it started either. He had to spray Ether in the throttle body and keep the gas pedal to the floor. The car started, but ran like ****. We finanaly get it home and then I started spending a lot of money. I bought a new Granitelli fuel pump, a new fuel filter, and a new fuel pressure regulator. These parts didn't help the car a bit. So then, I bought MSD plug wires, NGK Iridium plugs, a new optispark w/ MSD cap and rotor, a remanufactured water pump, crankshift sensor, ignition control modular, a TPS Sensor, and a new Ignition cylinder b/c wire broke. I figured this would help the car, but I was wrong. The car will turn over and only start sometimes. When you drive the car it still fills sluggish, so I cut behind the first Cat and before the second Cat b/c it was throwing pieces of the Cat out the exhaust. None of this helped! The car doesn't want to shift right either. My grandpa tested it on the computer and it showed 3 codes: misfire dection, intake air temp,(high input), and code number 1351. I couldn't find that code in my book, but 0351 was something dealing with the coil. I haven't replaced the coil pack yet. Would the MSD Cap and Rotor be too advanced for the stock coil or is the coil just bad? Would the coil pack effect the starting of the car? I tried to fill you in on everything I know about the car. I'm just getting pissed off and Need Help! SO PLEASE SOMEONE TRY TO HELP ME! THANKS FOR THE ADVICE.

Yes, it could be a coil. I believe shoebox has a write up on testing the coil on his website. They are cheap, so you may just buy one and see if it helps, especially since the rest of the ignition system is new... The other thing that I would definately check is the harness to the optispark. They are notorious for failure also and would cause the issues you've listed above...

Well I wanted to buy a MSD coil to match the cap and rotor kit I bought. I bought a MSD coil but, it was for a 1994-95 LT1. I can't find one for a 1996 LT1. However, I bought a new coil at AutoZone for it but, haven't changed it yet. So, what do I need to look for on the harness to the optispark? Are they easy to change? Are they expensive? Will that make the car feel slugglish and run like crap? Well, thanks for your advice!

P1351 = IC Circuit High Voltage

I found the code, anyone else know what could cause it? Haven't dealt with this one yet .

You do realize that the two cats are in parallel, and not in series? Sounds like you removed the cat on one branch of the Y-pipe, but not on the other.

...... it showed 3 codes: misfire dection, intake air temp,(high input), and code number 1351......
What was the specific code for the IAT sensor - P0112 for low voltage/high temperature, or P0113 for high voltage/low temperature? When the PCM sees high inlet air temp, it appears to pull out about 3* of timing. Not enough to be very noticable, but going to feel a bit sluggish. Might want to work your way through the 3 codes to eliminate them. Replacing the IAT sensor takes about 30-seconds.

.....I bought a new Granitelli fuel pump, a new fuel filter, and a new fuel pressure regulator. These parts didn't help the car a bit....
Did you check the fuel pressure, or did you just assume that's what it needs and started throwing parts at it?

As Fred has hinted, you need to pinpoint the individual problems and correct them one at a time. Don't just throw parts at it and hope for the best. Most likely you'll run out of money first, and or be pissed of enough and just sell it.

When my coil pack and Module went out my car didn't start at all it just kept turning over, you might want to try that, If it doesn't work then it might be the module under the coil pack...At least that is where it was on my 93...

Hope that helps

Try a new coolant temp sensor in the waterpump, they are cheap and easy to change. When mine went bad it would barley run and sputter and all that fun stuff. Sometimes it took 5 minutes to get it to start.
