Speedometer not working FOUND PROBLEM

The speedo on 1996 Camaro I was looking at isnt working. I just wanted to know if anyone has had this problem and what they did to fix it? I could buy a new VSS but what if that doesnt work? Would a scan tool work? Would it tell me if the VSS isnt working? What other tricks or troubleshooting has someone done?

I scan tool would be the best to see of the ECM is getting a signal from the VSS, that way you can do a continuity test before or after the ECM.

Unhappy

That soungs good but what if the VSS is working properly? Then what? I have a feeling this might be one of those problems where you never find the problem or you have to replace everything only to find out it cost next to nothing to fix.

It could be a dead cluster too. I know it doesn't sound too good, but there really is no way for someone to tell you, "VSS is bad" just from what you mentioned here.

Just the speedo? Any probably the odometer too, right?

Look underneath and make sure its plugged in before you spend money.

If the VVS is working then grab a continuity tester and start at ECM, check to see its sending signal... Then work your way to the cluster and find out where the signal is broken.. If it makes it to the cluster hit it, see if it comes back on works on mine! Not a bad idea to check the harness to make sure its pluged in right.

My cluster wouldn't show speed but my odo would still roll, if it does that, then its in the cluster.

Is the tach working? I have having the same problem but my tach is not working as well. I know the PCM is getting signal on both since I have LT1 edit. If both are not working then it is probably the cluster since the chance of the PCM not getting RPM and VSS is very small.

I unplugged my speedo a few years back because I didn't want to bother reprogramming for the tranny and gears. When I unplugged it under the car the odometer also stopped working. Everything else is fine.

The Odometer, Speedometer and cruise dont work. I have another cluster that has more miles and was working before, but now I am SO MAD. I broke the dash by the windshield or actually cracked it. This piece was perfect well I guess WAS was the key word. I will let you know if replacing the cluster was the problem.

I FOUND THE PROBLEM. There is a green & white wire from the PCM. There is a white connector that is in the passenger kick panel that is coming from the firewall. The wire there was cut from when they took out the factory wire harness for the Delco speakers. This made the speedometer work and the cruise work. If both the speedometer and the cruise dont work, check this wire.
