speedo jumps a lil when subs hit., please help

today on my way home from work i got on the highway and was crusin at 70 and listening to my stereo and every time the subs would hit the needle would jump up a few mph then back down when they let off, i gunned it from 75 to pass a truck and the needle hesitated then rapidly jumped to 81 ? has anyone ever seen this before? how can i fix it? i have had subs in my car for a few years and this has never happened. then only other thing i ve done to it after it came out of storage on saturday was install a bigger 800 watt 2 channel amp. is my speedo electrical? could the bigger amp have n e thing to do with it? it also jumps at any speed like from 25-27 every time the subs hit, then i turned off my stereo and it didnt do it. any he;p would be appreciated thanks

sorry if this thread doesnt belong in LT1 tech

Im not sure but the new amp could be drawing too much power. The speedo is electrical. Do your headliughts dim? That is a common problem with big amps.

Post this in the stereo forum and u will probably get more help, and ways of solving ur amp draw problems.

get a cap to build up some extra juice in. otherwise u could smoke your battery or alternator after pounding your system for long enough.

been there, done that. not fun at all

i think it might be my alternator ? one of my friends said that the alternators on early 4th gens are pretty weak 80amps (im not sure) can i put a newer style alternator on my car? (110amps)???

check your ground.

my friend had a rockford amp in his old minivan, and everytime the bass hit the tach would jump to like 4k (it couldnt reach 4k without blowing up)

I think he just relocated the ground and it fixed the problem.

having a stronger alternator definitely wouldn't hurt with that much juice running through it. i cant say if some of the 4 gens alternators were weaker then others but i can tell u this: phone around to shops in your area about having your current alternator built up. it would be a hell of alot cheaper then buyin a whole new one. basically they just re build it with more winds to make it stronger and handle more current.
