spacer on ATI damper hub or not ?

hello,

i recently purchased an ATi superdamper for my new engine and just wondering if i need to put the spacer with the hub or not.

I put it first but it seemed to me misaligned. Then removed it and it was not aligned for sure. Now how can i know if i need it or not ?

Thanks for answers

The spacer is for the crank without the CKP reluctor gear.

The 93-95 engines do not have a crank position sensor (CKP) nor a reluctor gear for the sensor. The CKP, with reluctor gear was added in 96, and continued in 97. It's there to provide the crank rotational velocity so that the OBD-II PCM can check for misfires. If you told them you wanted an engine for a 96, they should have sent you one with the CKP and reluctor.

This is what it all looks like, courtesy of Shoebox:

You should have a CKP sensor poked into the timing cover on the bottom left (as viewed from in front of the engine). See timing cover on the left in this photo:

we never talked about the year of the camaro i just ask an Lt1 short block, beleiving all were same.

I then put a LT4 timing chain set on it and the reluctor on it.

if the engine wasn't made for the reluctor what should happen and what should i see with damper off ?

I'm confused.

You say "I then put a LT4 timing chain set on it and the reluctor on it." But you're asking how to tell looking from the outside, if the engine has a reluctor?????

You have to have the 96/97 timing cover shown in the picture, with the hole on the bottom/left for the sensor. Notice that the 96/97 timing cover also has a large "donut" around the hole for the crank snout, that allows the reluctor gear to fit under it.

hello again,

let me make a summary of all.

I've ordered a short block without giving a year for my car, which is a 96.

When i put the engine in my car, i put a LT4 timing set + reluctor + my 96 timing cover + the ATI damper (without spacer) and it was misaligned.

I'm understanding there should be a difference in cranks between 93-95 and 96-97 because of the reluctor.

My questions are :

* can it be a problem using a short block for a previous engine than my car ? what is the difference, because the only difference i've seen is the key on the crank. If this is the only difference, i should not matter about it because my ATI hub is made for a key

* if all ok, do i need to put the spacer before my ATI hub ? ( i beleive yes)

Let me know please

There is no difference in the cranks. The key is different, to engage the reluctor. If using the reluctor, and omitting the ATI spacer did not produce the correct alignment, you might want to check with your short block supplier, because the specific purpose of the spacer is for use with no reluctor.

hello injuneer,

found my problem.

At same time i ordered the short block, i also bought some accesories brackets from Speed Inc (wanted to relocate the alternator).

I slowly take the time to measure everything and found the AC compressor was 4 mm forward. Just took the bracket to be modified. Hoping everything is correct now.
