my daily driver did exactly what shoebox described... the gauges turned off and on a couple of times while driving (the tach went down to zero, then jumped back up a couple of times) and then it started riding really REALLY rough (studdering, cutting in and out... etc) and eventually just died.

Trust me, its the ignition switch.
